Look for a lash primer, also known as mascara base, that contains vitamins and moisturizers to help keep your lashes healthy. Find lash primers in every budget--from department store brands like Smashbox to drugstore brands like Almay.

Test drive an eyelash primer for cheap. Primers are very popular with most drug store brands, and are often offered as a duo with a regular mascara. This way, you can try out a relatively small amount of eyelash primer offered as a dual ended mascara tube before you invest in a full bottle of mascara base.

Buy for your natural coloring. If your are very fair, opt for a clear eyelash primer. This way, you can skip the mascara and just use the primer to plump your eyelashes, or you can then easily layer the primer under light brown mascara without any telltale white primer showing through.
