How to Make a Four-strand Braid

From standard braids to the French version of the "do," this hair weaving technique is centuries old and never seems to go out of style. This style is suitable for a casual look, but dressy enough for an elegant evening. If you want something a bit more intricate and classy, learn how to make a four-strand braid.

Instructions

1. Practice this technique to make a four strand braid with string or on a friends hair before you try it on your own hair. Because this form of braiding takes a lot of hand coordination, you will want to master the trick before you try it on yourself.

2. Separate your hair into four strands, or cut four strings and secure the top with a knot. Count the strings from one to four, from left to right. Begin by crossing the second string over the first and the third string over the fourth. You should see two "X" patterns formed with the four strings.

3. Cross the new second strand over the new third strand to create an "X" in the middle of the four strings and then begin the pattern again.

4. Be patient, as this technique takes lots of practice. Many people find that it is easiest to slip the strands between the thumb and index fingers and the index and middle fingers and then use a twist to make the first two crosses. You can then maintain a grip on the hair or string as you make the middle cross and begin again.
