How to Replace a Typewriter Ribbon
Electric typewriters often have cartridge ribbons, whereas manuals have old-fashioned spool ribbons.

Lift the top off the typewriter.

Remove the old ribbon. On a manual, lift the spools out directly. For a cartridge, press the release lever.

Set aside.

Place the new cartridge in the holder and snap down.

For a spool model, place the two spools in the holders.

Thread the ribbon through the wire holding it in front of the roller.

Close the top.

Tips & Warnings
You may be able to reuse an old spool ribbon by flipping it over.
Don't put the red ink side of the ribbon up unless you want to type in red ink.

The keys only hit a certain part of the ribbon, leaving a lot of ink in the unused area. Try a spray of WD-40 onto a fully wound, but dry, ribbon. Leave it to soak in, and then reinsert. It comes out good as new! -

On old typewriters with spools, they may not be available anymore. Just buy any spooled ribbon of any make and rewind it manually into your present spool that is not available. Fingers get a bit dirty and it's also a bit time consuming. At least you don't have to discard the old typewriter anymore if it's precious to you.
