Bring the longer end across, behind and over the shorter end, forming a simple knot. Pull the knot snugly around your neck.
Fold the shorter end where the hourglass shape begins to narrow (the widest point of the shorter end), forming a bow shape. The bow shape should be in front. Hold the bow in a horizontal position at your neck.

on 1/5/2008 This past year I have been teaching my 3 oldest sons how to build websites. We built a website together about how to tie a tie. This site gives instructions, video, and diagrams on how to tie a tie to over 15 different tie knots. The website is www.2tieatie.com. This video on this site is done by my teenage sons and their friends. If they can do it so can you. My teenagers are the ones who tied the knots, if they do it so can you. A Bow Knot is covered, but the one on this site is actually a little better. This is not only a really fun site, but a great story. Check it out.

on 5/10/2007 I've found a good video demonstration at www.felixfelix.com . You can also buy a bow tie to practice yourself.

on 12/31/2006 Here's just a crazy idea...don't tie a bow.
Just wear a "tie" and be, uh, well...original.

on 8/8/2006 Keep in mind that it's really the same process as you would use to tie any bow, like your shoelaces. You just have to smooth it out so that it looks nice.
Also, if you learn how to tie a bow tie one-handed, you can win a lot of money in bar-bets.

on 8/8/2006 I fretted for ages worrying about how to tie my tie. I checked out this site and did the following, which ended up in a perfect bow tie:
- Put the tie over the top of your leg and tie as if it were shoe laces. Important: Do not look at what you are doing the first time. You will end up with a bow tie. It might need some adjustment, but essentially that's it.
- Practice it a few times around your leg and then do the same around your neck. Important: Don't look in the mirror until you are finished. Then, adjust in the mirror as needed.
