How to Pack Your Car for a Move

Before you stash everything away in the moving truck, make sure you have what you need for the immediate future packed in your car. Here are some suggestions.

1. Decide who is traveling in the car and leave enough room for everyone, keeping legroom in mind as well.

2. 

   Take along travel aids, such as a cellular phone, map, first aid kit, car tools, sunglasses, camera and film, snacks, liquids, paper plates, cups, plastic utensils, pet supplies, address book, paper towels, and plastic bags.

3. 

   Consider entertainment, including games, books, music, CD or tape players, headphones, and books on tape.

4. 

   Check for a spare tire, jack, jumper cables and snow chains if you'll need them.

5. Pack things you will need immediately upon your arrival, including toilet paper, trash bags, paper towels, telephone, medications, food for children or pets, hand soap, coffeemaker and coffee.

6. 

   Be sure you have all your valuable items and documents: jewelry, stock certificates, legal documents, credit cards, checkbook, wallet and any special items you don't want to entrust to movers.

Tips & Warnings

• Remember your pets and their travel equipment.
• If you have room, consider taking cleaning supplies for the new place: mop, broom, bucket, cleaner, rags and vacuum cleaner. You may need them when you get there.
• Try not to overpack your vehicle if you're traveling a long distance. Moving is already stressful for most people; make it as easy and comfortable for yourself as possible.

need until arrival in the spare
tire well. Finish packing the car, then put the spare tire and jack on top of everything else. If you have a flat, you won't have to empty the trunk to get to the spare.
