How to Choose Makeup Brushes

Many makeup experts feel makeup brushes are actually more important than the brand of makeup for making a person look her best. Choosing makeup brushes can be difficult. But if you keep a few things in mind, you'll be able to choose the best ones.

1. Look at the hair in the brush. Brushes made from squirrel, sable, mink and weasel are the best. However they're also the most expensive. Cheaper options include goat, pony and human hair. Choose first-cut or top-cut brushes as these are cruelty free. Nylon is the least expensive and also the worst choice for everything other than putting makeup on eyebrows.

2. Use powder or blush brushes for adding powder or blush to your skin. These brushes are flat with rounded edges. Many experts recommend avoiding the big brushes for powder as this may make it hard to get the powder into the areas you need.

3. Choose a lip brush with fine bristles and a straight edge. If you wear lip liner, choose a small lip brush with a pointed tip. While you may not usually like a lip brush, it's great for getting the last part of the lipstick out of the tube.

4. Purchase a pointed or angled brush for applying eye shadow as an eyeliner. Use a basic eye shadow brush for applying eye shadow. If you like using the sponge tip (the ones that come in the container) use your eye shadow brush for blending.

5. Consider purchasing individual brushes rather than a kit so you can specifically choose the brushes you need.
