If you use instant messaging to chat with people on a daily basis, you'll enjoy Google's group chat. Group chat allows you to chat with many people at the same time, it's like throwing an online party. Invite as many online friends as you want.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Chat with someone on your chat list. Let her know you're going to invite others to join your conversation.

  2. Step 2

Click on "Options" at the bottom left corner of your current chat window and click on "Group chat."

  3. Step 3

Look at the top of the chat window. You'll see a box appear below the words "Add people to this chat."

  4. Step 4

Type the name of the person you want to add to your group chat. Click invite and wait to see if the person joins your group.

  5. Step 5

Close the chat window by clicking the "X" in the top right corner to end your conversations. Other people in the chat receive a message letting them know you've left the chat.

  6. Step 6

Rejoin the chat by instant messaging someone still in the group chat and ask for an invitation to join again. The group chat continues until everyone has left the chat.

Tips & Warnings
  • The symbol for the group chat is a double speech bubble. If the group chat icon isn't in your chat window, log off and back on to Gmail.
  • An "off the record" chat deactivates when you join group chat. Make sure to switch back, if you need a secure chat, after you leave the group chat.
  • When you add a new person to the group chat, the previous conversation is deleted. No one in the group is able to view the previous chat.
