1
Open your Maya program and start with a blank page. First, place a small, flat-like cylinder. This is the basis most often used in building a model. Mold the cylinder into a half moon. You want a flat surface on top for the next shape to lay on. This modeling process requires some imagination. You need to be able to visualize the finished product as you go, but be open to different ideas as you construct your model.

2
Add on a cone by first selecting the cone, or pyramid, tool. It will place a flat, circle on your page. You can use the mouse to select different areas on the circle and manipulate it into the shape and size you want. Once you have done this, move it to sit on the cylinder you creating in Step 1.

Use the smoothing tool to manipulate the cone and cylinder to form together and cause a "waistline" appearance between the two. This will not be the actual waistline; think of it as the neck. Play around with it a little until you have a shape with which you are comfortable. You can mold this section of the model to start creating a face.

Create bones for your model by rigging the model. This allows you to create bones. Keep in mind the software is designed to model in a realistic manner. If there is no "bone" in a location like a "hand", the hand will not move when you animate the model.
