Sole proprietorship is a specific designation for business owners who run a small business, typically with little or no inventory during the tax year. Usually, you can list a sole proprietorship on the same tax forms you use to file your personal income tax returns.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go directly to the source. Contact the Internal Revenue Service, or IRS, to request that tax forms be mailed to your home. Call (800) 829-1040 to speak with a representative.

  2. Step 2

Log onto the IRS website and download the tax forms you need to file your return. Download and fill out the tax form labeled 1040 Schedule C for your sole proprietorship as well as your personal tax information.

  3. Step 3

Access the forms by visiting the Forms.gov website and searching for the 1040.

  4. Step 4

Ask your personal accountant to fill out the tax forms for you during a meeting between the two of you. Hiring an accountant or a tax specialist provides you with the peace of mind that comes with knowing your tax forms are filled out properly.

  5. Step 5

Visit the post office. During tax season, they typically stock a large supply of the most commonly used tax forms. The forms are free to the public.

  6. Step 6

Purchase an inexpensive tax preparation software program. The tax forms are integrated into the software, allowing you to fill out and file the return electronically. You could also print out the completed form and mail it in.
