How to Build a Longboard Skateboard

Save

In order to build the perfect longboard skateboard, you will first need to assemble the necessary parts–most of which you can find at your local hardware store and skate shop. Once you have gathered the necessary parts, you will need to create a makeshift wood press. After you cut a design for your skateboard and pressed the wood accordingly, you will then need to attach your trucks and wheel. Those are the basics. Read on for the details of building a longboard.

Things You'll Need

  • Thin wood
  • Makeshift wood press
  • Trucks
  • Wheels
  • Choose your wood. The wood you choose will make the deck of your skateboard. It will also determine the strength and capability of your longboard, so choose wisely. Most enthusiasts will choose either Baltic birth or maple wood, as both have the durability to withstand constant shifts of bodyweight. Make sure that the pieces you choose are between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch thick. You will need two pieces to create your skateboard deck.

  • Design the length and shape of your skateboard deck. Both are completely up to you, but keep in mind that some shapes will be easier to ride than others, while some will be more aerodynamic.

  • Cut your pieces of wood into the shape desired and then glue them together using a waterproof adhesive.

  • Create a makeshift wood press. You will need to bend the wood so that it assumes a natural skateboard curve. See the link in the Resources section at the bottom of this page for instructions.

  • Leave your shaped wood in the makeshift press for three to five days. After that time has elapsed, remove it from the press and examine the wood for any cracks or splinters. Be sure that the wood is bent to your exact specifications, because you will not have another chance to bend it after the next steps are completed.

  • Design the deck. Apply stain to the wood in two coats and then proceed to paint your deck in any design you desire.

  • Choose the trucks and wheels you wish to place on your skateboard. You will need to visit a skate shop to find that trucks and wheels that suit your needs best. Some trucks will come stocked with washers and bushing, while others will require you to purchase them separately.

  • Drill corresponding holes into your wooden deck and screw in your trucks after you have connected them to the wheels. Attach your washers and bushing (if applicable).
