How to Use the Atkins Diet for Rosacea

Rosacea is a red rash that appears on the face. People with this condition include Bill Clinton, Rembrant and J.P. Morgan. In fact, Morgan was so embarrassed by it that he refused to have his picture taken. But some studies have shown that diet may be the key to keeping rosacea under control. Here's how to use the Atkins diet to help control rosacea.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a dermatologist. A dermatologist will be able to determine if you do indeed have rosacea and if the Atkins diet will work for you. Although you may end up being healthier, it is not recommended to put all of your hopes on the Atkins diet to deal with your rosacea.

    • 2

Start on the Atkins diet. See Resources for a link to the Atkins site, which has a basic run-down of the Atkins diet.

    • 3

Cut out all sugars, including glucose, fructose, sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup. You can find these ingredients in many candies, breads and soft drinks. Cut out all unrefined carbohydrates (white flour, white sugar, junk food). In the beginning of the Atkins diet, you also cut out natural sugars in fruits and sweet vegetables such as carrots, corn, beets and sweet potatoes.

    • 4

Restrict your intake to vegetables, protein and fats. You will get the carbohydrates you need from vegetables at first. For breakfast, you could have an omelette with broccoli and cheddar cheese. For lunch, you could have a Caesar salad with a grilled chicken breast. For dinner, you could have a steak and a salad or other vegetable. As the diet progresses, you can slowly add fruits, whole grains and other complex carbs back into your diet.

    • 5

Understand that the theory behind this diet is that the body will burn through its stores of carbohydrate energy in a few days, and will then start burning the fat stored in your body. The protein and fat you are consuming will make you feel fuller than a traditional nonfat diet would make you feel.

    • 6

Stick to the diet. You will need some support and motivation. Keep in mind that this way of eating will not only help you shed unwanted pounds, but will also help manage your rosacea.
