Robots come in all shapes and sizes depending on the task they were created for. Traditionally, when we think of robots, we think of humanoid robots, or robots made in imitation of the fundamental framework of humans. While building a functioning replica of a human is tricky business, building a non-functioning replica of a human is very easy and can be done with a variety of different materials.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • At least three soda bottles
  • Wood
  • Very strong adhesive glue

How to Build a Robot Made of Soda Bottles

Step1
Collect the soda bottles. You can drink them all yourself, but be sure to pace yourself. If you drink three bottles of soda all at once, you’ll be too jittery to build anything, much less a model robot. Taking soda bottle donations from your friends and family is an acceptable alternative. Digging through the trash is never a good idea.
Step2
Set two soda bottles side by side in their natural position (upright). These will form the legs. They can be touching each other or spaced slightly apart, but don’t set them too far apart from each other. It may make your robot collapse.
Step3
Cut a thin piece of wood into a rectangle long enough to stretch between the two outside edge of the top of the legs, and wide enough to comfortably hold a third bottle’s base. This will form a sort or pelvis and hips to support the robot’s torso.
Step4
Apply glue to the top of the legs and rest the piece of wood on top of that. Apply more glue to the bottom of the third bottle and place it in the center of the piece of wood that is the pelvis. Let the whole thing set until the glue dries. Read the glue package to see how long you should wait.
Step5
Add the rest of the body parts as you see fit. You can call it a day after you attach the arms and head, which could be made out of anything. For the head, try making a box out construction paper, or cutting a hole in a tennis ball and placing it over the top of the bottle neck. For the arms, try attaching pipe cleaners or gluing on some straws. Use your imagination.
