How to Save Money on Air Conditioning

Just because the temperatures are rising does not mean that your air-conditioning bill has to rise as well. There are ways you can save money on air conditioning while you still stay cool. Try to employ some or all of these tips to save money while you beat the heat and help the environment.

1. Set central-air thermostats to kick in automatically when the indoor temperature rises above 76 degrees F.

2. Use your window air-conditioning unit only at night. Double up on sleeping arrangements so more family members can benefit from the cooled air.

3. Turn off the air conditioner on low-humidity days, and on days when the temperature remains below 85 degrees F. Every day you do this will save on the rising costs of air conditioning your home or business.

4. Use ceiling fans and window fans whenever possible, especially at night, to bring in the cooler air. This can be done in place of turning on the air conditioning.

5. Turn on the air-conditioning unit early in the day whenever the temperatures are predicted to be 85 degrees F or higher, or when it is predicted to be raining or extremely humid. That way the air conditioner will not have to work as hard later on, since you started the cooling process gradually. This actually requires less energy than waiting for the brutal heat or humidity to hit.

6. Keep blinds, curtains, windows and doors closed so the sun is not as potent and your home does not heat up as quickly. Use a ceiling fan to keep air circulating.

7. Have your air conditioner tuned up yearly so it is running at peak efficiency. It is worth the small investment in a service call.

8. Pay close attention to the Energy Star rating and the unit's efficiency when you're shopping for an air conditioner. This can mean a significant savings on your overall energy bill.

9. Take advantage of the wind. Open two opposite windows so you can enjoy a breeze on days when it is windy.

10. Plant a shade tree in front of your home. This is nature's natural air conditioner. The tree's shade will keep the sun from directly hitting your home, so the inside will heat up more slowly.
