How to Ascend/Increase Your DSL Bandwidth to Cable Speed

The potential for increasing your DSL speeds to match those of cable depends on where you live and how you use your connection. Your connection speeds are determined by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and what they can provide in your area. In addition, DSL speeds are determined by how far away you are from a switch. The farther away your home is, the slower your connection despite any advertised speed.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your ISP by calling customer service or by visiting their website for available Internet speeds. If it's possible to increase your bandwidth, you'll be able to do so at an increased monthly rate.

    • 2

Switch to a different ISP. The ISP you currently use isn't necessarily the only one operating in your area; you might be able to get a faster connection from another provider. Be careful to take note of whether you will lose any package deals for TV and Internet you have currently if you do switch.

    • 3

Remove any unnecessary consumption of bandwidth. Your connection can be blazing fast, but if the programs running on your system are too liberal with your bandwidth even the best connection will be slowed to a crawl. Shut down any program you don't actively need and see if your speeds improve.
