These days, there are more ways to get a job with a flexible schedule than ever before. Technological advancements have given many employees the option to telecommute, and more workplaces are becoming open to their employees' desire to work under a flexible schedule.

Become self-employed. Whether you're a contractor or a CEO of a small business, when you work for yourself, you can determine exactly what time of day or night you're on-duty. Self-employed people often work longer hours than employees, but the hours they do work are as flexible as they choose.

Get a temp job. When you work for a temporary placement agency, you can often set your own parameters around the assignments you take on. This might minimize the amount of work you get from the agency, but the assignments you do get will be in accordance with your own schedule preferences.

Go for jobs with annual salaries versus hourly rates. Employees that are paid by the hour are often expected to be onsite and available for customers or supervisors during set hours. Employees that are paid by salary are more often expected to meet certain goals and deadlines regardless of what hours they work, and therefore tend to have more flexible schedules.

Work as a substitute teacher or casual employee. Substitute teachers are typically called on short notice to take a teaching assignment at their discretion. Casual employees sometimes also work in a similar fashion.

Know the tradeoffs to a flexible schedule. Being able to set your own hours typically means sacrificing other things as a higher salary, dependable income and health benefits. If you value these things over your time and freedom, then a job with flexible hours might not be the best choice in the long run.
