1
Travel to your shooting area, which may be a shooting range or an isolated location in the country. The main thing is that you're in an area where people are not in danger of being struck by a stray round or pellet the ricochets when shot. A shooting range provides the safest environment for shooting, while a walk outdoors provides more enjoyment for the sports. Consider your level of experience and skill, while determining what location best suits you on that particular outing.

Set up your target. Place your target at one end of the shooting range and then take your position at the opposite end of the range, directly across from the target. About 40 yards in an open clearing is a good distance for a beginner who is just learning how to shoot a pellet gun. You may want to be even closer if it is a pellet pistol that you are shooting.

Think safety first. First and foremost, make sure the safety is on. Keep the safety on until you are ready to pull the trigger and then turn it back on again after you have fired your shot. Also take a moment to analyze your range to make sure no one is in danger of being hit by your pellet gun. Everyone should be standing behind the shooter.

Raise the pellet gun and take aim. There are three standard positions which you should learn--the standing position, the kneeling position and the prone position. The standing position is most common for beginning shooters, since you simply stand, take aim and fire. In the kneeling position, the shooter kneels down on one knee, giving an entirely different perspective of the shot. The prone position has the shooter laying flat on his belly to fire the weapon. If your pellet gun requires pump action rather than Co2 cartridges, you will need to pump it up before getting into position.

Lock your sites onto the target, release the safety on the pellet gun and squeeze the trigger. After you have taken your shot, turn the safety back on. Assuming there are no other shooters, it is now safe to walk down to analyze where your shot impacted the target.

Tips & Warnings
Always treat your pellet gun as if it is cocked and loaded, no matter how certain you are that the chamber is empty.
There should be no one standing off to the sides of the target and never located behind the target area.
