Snowboarding is an awesome sport if you don't mind the cold. It's mostly popular in the winter months, but there are some places you can go year round. Snowboarding might be intimidating to someone who has never attempted to do it before, but if you are willing to follow a few simple steps, you will be snowboarding like a pro in no time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Snow clothes
  • Snowboard
  • Hat
  • Goggles
  • Helmet
  • Gloves with wrist bands
  1. Step 1

Get dressed for snowboarding. You need snow clothes, gloves with wrist bands, a hat, goggles, and a helmet if you are new at the sport. A helmet will protect you from any injury that may occur.

  2. Step 2

Find an area you can practice in. You want to strap your feet into the boards unless your board has slip-in foot holds. Make sure your feet are securely in the foot holds, and try balancing on your board. Get a feel for the board for a few minutes before you move on to the next step.

  3. Step 3

Go up your hill. To get to the top of the hill, you need to keep your back foot out of the foot hold. Point your body toward the top of the hill and lift the foot in the board up a step while leaning on the foot that is free. Then move your back foot up and repeat until you are at the top of the hill.

  4. Step 4

When you are at the top of the hill, you must get both feet back in to the board. Look down the mountain, keeping your balance in check. When you are ready to go, point your toes toward the bottom of the mountain. When you are ready to stop, bring your toes back up. This will take a little getting use to, so keep practicing at it.

  5. Step 5

Use caution when learning how to navigate the lift. You will need the lift to take you to the top of the hill. You are going to keep your front foot in the snowboard and push yourself along with the back foot. Take a look at how the other snowboarders are backing up their bodies and gliding in to the lift to give you a visual example.

  6. Step 6

Practice moving side to side while going down the hill. You will need a combination of your toe pointing and the maneuvering of your body. Shifting your body weight will determine which side you slide to next. Keep your toes pointed in the direction you want to go. Practice this several times until you get the hang of it.

  7. Step 7

Consider taking a training course. Most lodges offer courses to beginners. It will help you master the steps above much faster so you can move on to the next step. This is not a mandatory step, but just an option that is available to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you start off on the beginner slopes. Going to fast down the advanced hills without experience is dangerous and should not be attempted.
  • Don't attempt to do any tricks until you have mastered the basics. This will probably not happen the first time you go snowboarding. Failing to learn the basics first can result in unnecessary injuries.
