Pick an Outfit Out For a First Date

A first date outfit should be comfortable and stylish. It should also be appropriate for your first date activity. Follow the tips below to pick an outfit out for a first date and to make sure that you are well-dressed for your big night.

Things You'll Need:

  • Clean, well-fitting clothes
  • Comfortable shoes

    Outtfit for a First Date

  1. Step 1

Keep the look simple. Don't go overboard by trying too hard to impress your date. Girls can wear a trendy pair of jeans with a cute top, or wear a casual cotton sheath dress. Guys can wear jeans with a polo shirt and sneakers. Don't wear a suit or work attire as it will make the date feel too serious.

  2. Step 2

Be comfortable in what you are wearing. First dates are already anxiety-inducing, and wearing an uncomfortable outfit will ruin the date and make you feel clumsy. Put on your outfit about an hour before the date and walk around in it to gauge its comfort level.

  3. Step 3

Pick a first date outfit that fits your chosen activity. If you are going bowling, wear jeans or shorts, but don't wear a dress or a skirt. If it's a dinner date, guys should wear tailored slacks and a dress shirt while girls can put on a classic little black dress.

  4. Step 4

Dare to be different. Don't try to change your style for your date. If you like to wear quirky prints or funny message t-shirts, go ahead and show off your unique personality.

  5. Step 5

Wear comfortable shoes. There's nothing worse than being unable to walk because your uncomfortable shoes are hurting your feet. You'll only end up looking foolish and awkward.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask friends and family to critique your first date outfit and offer any suggestions.
  • Don't go out and buy a whole new wardrobe just for the date. Work with what you have, and you'll be fine.
