Cars are a major source of air pollution. Paying attention to our driving habits and the car we buy can effect us both long term and short term. Not everyone can afford high dollar gas saving cars, but we can make smarter choices with what we have. The following are things to look for when buying a new car to be more environmentally friendly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Determine what size of car you really need. There is usually no need to buy a large SUV for a three member family. A small, light weighted car uses up to half the fuel of a large SUV.
Step2
Do not buy options you do not need. Both power steering and air conditioning sends of harmful chlorofluorocarbons even without use. For those who live in a cold climate, why pay extra for a air conditioning unit. If these options are understandably nessacary you may consider having a device that recycles CFC's installed in your car by a mechanic.
Step3
Look for a car that is lightly colored and has tinted windows. This will allow your car to stay cooler in hot weather.
Step4
Consider using radial tires. They are cost effective and improve over all miles per a gallon.

on 6/16/2008 hey, I guess my car isn't so bad after all! It's a small compact. It still has the old a/c system, but I don't use it that much!
