Most people have cell phones, and use them while driving long or short distances.
Step2
These people even feel safe and comfortable, buying a headset, that allows both hands to be free. A multitude of commercials praise various products, which allow you to talk, while yoour hands are on the wheel.
Step3
BUT, the issue is not one of "free hands". The problem is that the distraction is cerebral--by that I mean that the driver is focused on the content of the call--rather than the road. This could include anything from an argument with your girlfriend, to a business call from a customer ,to just acknowledging that your son is flunking out of Yale. Your thought are drawn off the roadway and into the call.
Step4
There is NO way that you can focus on your driving,(especially defensive driving), while focusing on the conversation.
Tips & Warnings
When driving, it's all about your focus, and if it not on the road, but on the call, you AND the driving public are in danger.
To make or receive a cell phone call, (as inconvenient as this sounds,) it is safe only when you pull off the road safely, and pay attention to the caller.
