How to Sell Your Movie Idea

So you have an idea to sell for TV or movies? You don't have to know about screenwriting or have scriptwriting software to sell your idea. It takes a little research and know-how to get your idea into the hands of television and movie producers. Here are some tips on selling your movie idea:

Taking Your Idea to Hollywood

1. Write down your movie idea

   Begin by writing your idea down on paper. Or if you want to learn how to write a script/treatment, then purchase screenwriting software. Type your story in clear, precise, error-free paragraphs. Study how to write scripts to gain insights on the best writing styles of treatments and loglines.

2. Register your newly written work at the United States Copyright Office or become a member of the Writers Guild and register it there. Then prepare a detailed proposal with a cover letter, biography, and a short summary of your idea, this summary will become your logline for a movie. Be sure to include your name, address, phone number, email address and cell phone number.

3. Begin to research the movie industry. There are many publishers, agents, and producers who are looking for your type of script. Make sure the movie script you are writing matches the preference of the agent or producer. Find out who is looking for your particular kind of script whether it be a comedy, drama, children movie or horror story.

4. Find a producer who will love your idea!

   Check out sources such as the Writer's Market Book, and the Hollywood Creative Directory. Find agents or smaller movie producers who would be willing to sell your story. Select the best matching producer for your movie idea and choose at least 20 producers who may be interested in your idea.

5. Now make copies of your proposal and put them into envelopes, stamp them and mail them off to your chosen list. After mailing, wait a month or so for a response, then began calling them to see if they show interest in your movie script. If nothing bites, then bait the hook again and mail out another 50 copies of your idea.

6. Some producers will let you know right away if your idea is good. If a couple of them like your idea, try to negotiate a good contract with them. But study contract negotiation beforehand to make sure you get the best deal.
