How to Etch Sheet Metal

Etching on sheet metal is a completely different experience from etching on glass. With glass you can use a simple cream that will eat away at the glass, but metal etching requires more tools and more serious chemicals. These chemicals will eat through almost anything including human skin, which means you must wear protective gear at all times. Once you etch through your first piece of sheet metal though you’ll be clamoring to try your next piece.

Things You'll Need

  • Sheet metal
  • Design
  • Transfer paper
  • Heavy weighted object
  • Enamel finish or paint (resistant)
  • Safety goggles
  • Rubber gloves
  • Hydrochloric/muriatric acid
  • Dish soap
  • Water

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the design that you want to etch into the piece of sheet metal. You can sketch it out on a piece of paper or draw it onto your computer. Once you have a design in mind, copy it onto a piece of transfer paper similar to those used by tattoo artists.

    • 2

Place the transfer sheet on top of the piece of sheet metal and hold it firmly in place. Put a large book or other heavy object on top of the paper to make sure it transfers fully onto the metal. Peel it off slowly to make sure it transferred properly.

    • 3

Cover the outside edges of your design and any other area you don’t want etched with a type of enamel finish or paint, which is resistant to the acid. You can even use nail polish if you plan on working on a small area because the enamel protects the metal from the etching.

    • 4

Wear safety goggles and heavy duty rubber gloves to protect your skin and body from the chemicals. The acid can eat through your skin so take as many precautions as possible. Also make sure you use a well ventilated area, so the fumes don’t overwhelm you.

    • 5

Pour a small amount of the muriatric acid onto your design. This may also be labeled as hydrochloric acid depending on where you purchased it. The acid will eat away at any part of the metal that you didn’t cover with the enamel resistant material.

    • 6

Wash the piece with dish soap and water to remove any traces of the chemical from the surface of the metal and take your excess acid to your nearest hazardous waste dump. Once the metal dries your design will be permanently etched into the piece.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of transfer paper you can also use carbon paper like those sheets found in checkbooks. Carbon paper is available from most craft stores.

  • Never throw out the acid or pour it down the drain. The acid can eat through the metal in your sink or cause health problems if left outside.
