Far too many workers put their faith in office politics and believe their careers will either soar or plunge as a result of them. Office politics are a fundamental part of the daily grind. Sometimes people who cannot succeed on their own merit play them, and oftentimes, workers who pursue personal hidden agendas at the expense of others practice them. So, how do you play or stay in the office political game? Consider these eight steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn and understand how the office political game is played. It requires a minimum of two players.

  2. Step 2

Learn the rules as you play the game. You cannot afford to ignore office politics; whether you choose to play the political game or abstain is up to you.

  3. Step 3

Don’t get trapped in someone else’s agenda. Use ethical influence to impact others without being sucked into the game.

  4. Step 4

Avoid making enemies as you play. Strengthen professional relationships with others in your company and industry.

  5. Step 5

Increase your awareness of how the company works-who has informal power and clout, and the unwritten as well as written rules of engagement.

  6. Step 6

Watch out for office “pets” (co-workers who are given preferential treatment).

  7. Step 7

Don’t take it personally. Win with honor as you realize your dreams and aspirations, and progress in your career.
