How to Buy a Green Tree Frog

Green tree frogs have rapidly become a household pet and it is no wonder. These beautiful little creatures require very little room and are easy to care for, although they do require an adequate supply of water and must be monitored on a daily basis. You can find these exotic looking amphibians in nearly any pet store for under $10. Use caution when purchasing a tree frog and look for signs of stress or other health issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a frog that is brightly colored and does not have any signs of discoloration. A few small white spots are normal on healthy frogs. If the spots are brown or darkened it is sign of a poor environment either due to overcrowding, handling or general disease.

    • 2

Observe for red leg. This is a potentially fatal disease that can be caused by overcrowding, low temperatures, or poor hygiene. Check the inner thighs for a sign of reddening and the skin for a dull lifeless luster. A frog with reg leg will usually appear inactive at the bottom of the cage.

    • 3

Watch for signs of rickets that can be caused by poor nutrition or a lack of UV light. The hind legs become soft and bowed making it difficult for the frog to jump or climb properly.

    • 4

Check the eyes. Eyes that are dull and have a cloudy haze over the pupil may have been exposed to polluted water. Although this is treatable by bathing with a saline solution for several days, it is best to choose a frog that is in optimum health.

    • 5

Choose a frog that is free of any signs of illness or disease. The best indication that your frog is healthy is his appearance and activity level. Taking a few moments to check for signs of disease is well worth the effort involved.

Tips & Warnings

  • A good indicator of the care your frog has received in the pet store is the environment he is in. There should be a source of fresh water readily available, limbs or branches for him to climb on, and the area should be well ventilated. The area should be warm, but not overheated.

  • Take a look around the pet store. Is it clean and well maintained? If you are overwhelmed with pet odors, consider shopping at another pet store for your green frog.
