Instructions

    • 1

Measure out 1 cup of dry, unused coffee grounds. Put this into a glass or enamel pan.

    • 2

Add 1 cup of water to the pan. Don't put a lid on it.

    • 3

Put the heat on medium high. Bring the coffee grounds and water to a boil.

    • 4

When it's boiling hard, turn the heat down to medium. Simmer for 30 minutes. Watch it to make sure the water doesn't boil out. You may have to turn it down further if it continues to boil rather than simmer.

    • 5

Shut it off after 30 minutes. Let it cool, then strain the liquid. Use a coffee filter to make sure none of the grounds fall through. This is now brown dye.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use this dye on Easter eggs, papier mache or other craft projects. Know that it fades with time so it's not great for fabrics or other items you want to permanently dye.

  • Use a plastic cloth to protect the table when you use this dye.
