As if writing a short story was not hard enough, trying to get your short story published may be even harder!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Define the type of short story you have written. Is it horror? Scifi? General Fiction? In order to submit, you need to determine the right audience for your short story.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want to try to publish your short story in print or online. Do you even care which one? Also you need to decide if you plan to get paid for your short story. Many places do pay for publication but they are extremly competitive.

  3. Step 3

Reading the Writers Market or read through directories such as ralan.com to find different Ezine or print publications that print your genre.

  4. Step 4

Read the submission guidelines very clearly! If you submit your short story and do not follow the submission guidelines, you can expect the editor to ignore your submission. Most magazines recieve hundres and hundreds of submissions a day and they will not think twice about throwing yours away.

  5. Step 5

Create your cover letter and bio if needed and make sure your short story is formatted with the proper font and layout requested.

  6. Step 6

Send it off via email if they accept it or print it out and send it via slow mail. As I mentioned, they recieve a great deal of submissions a day so be patient once submitted. It may take weeks and even months before you hear a response!

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all magazines accept submissions if you have sent them to more than one place. Be sure to check in case you were planning to send the same short story to multiple places
