Residents in the state of Iowa can e-file their Federal and State taxes for free. This not only makes it easier to get their taxes done, but it is a lot less expensive than hiring an accountant. If you qualify, it makes sense to take advantage of this free e-filing service.

From Quick Guide: Tax by State
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the Iowa Department of revenue website. The website lists three companies that offer free e-filing.

  2. Step 2

Determine if you qualify. Not everybody in the state of Iowa qualifies for free tax e- filing. Each company listed on the Iowa Department of Revenue website has its own qualification requirements. One company allows an adjusted gross income level of $54,000 while another caps the requirement at an adjusted gross income of $10,000. Review each company separately to determine if you can use them to e-file your taxes for free.

  3. Step 3

Select the company for which you qualify and read all of the filing instructions. If you have any questions be sure to contact the company and get your questions answered. You don’t want to incorrectly file your taxes.

  4. Step 4

Accumulate your tax information. Before you begin to e-file your taxes, you should make sure you have everything you need. Gather your W-2’s and related tax documentation. Organize the documents to make the e-filing process easier.

  5. Step 5

Complete the tax forms and submit them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to print a copy of your taxes for your records.
  • Free e-filing does not mean a waiver for paying taxes owed. If you find that you owe money, you must submit the amount owed prior to the April 15th tax deadline.
