Vaseline is one of those products that everyone seems to have in the medicine cabinet. That's because petroleum jelly, made of mineral oils and waxes, is so versatile that you can use it every day for many purposes. Whether you're battling irritated skin or can't seem to get your waterproof mascara to wash off, Vaseline is a multitasker that can ride to the rescue to meet your beauty needs.
Moisturize and Soothe
The mineral oils and waxes in petroleum jelly help create a barrier over the skin that locks in moisture and speeds up the healing process. It’s ideal for smoothing over dry, cracked or chapped skin, including areas like your elbows or the heels of your feet -- as well as your face. Replace your lip balm with a thin layer of Vaseline over chapped lips, or use it to soothe minor cuts, scrapes and burns.
Reach for Vaseline as a hair treatment and styling product for damaged hair. Apply a little to your fingertips and smooth it over the ends of your hair to hide spilt ends, frizziness and dryness when you don't have time for a trim. Use it like you would a hair wax to add texture to your hair and tame flyaways -- but in small amounts. Cleanse your hair with a clarifying shampoo when it's time to remove the thick substance.
Remove Eye Makeup
Whether you use waterproof eye makeup or not, it can be difficult to take off mascara, eyeliner and shadow at the end of the day. Eye makeup removers do the job, but they can irritate sensitive eyes and dry the delicate skin in the area. The oils in Vaseline make it an ideal gentle makeup remover, because they can break down even waterproof makeup, while moisturizing and soothing the skin around your eyes. Gently rub a small amount of Vaseline over your eyes, then use a tissue or cotton pad to carefully wipe it away. You’ll get the added benefit of conditioning your eyelashes so they aren’t prone to breakage or falling out, too.
Customize Your Makeup
Vaseline’s thick texture and shiny finish make it an ideal mixing medium for creating your own makeup. Mix a little of your favorite loose powder eye shadow with some Vaseline to create a rich cream shadow; just make sure to prime your lid with an eye shadow primer or some foundation and translucent powder to prevent creasing. For a dewy cream blush, combine petroleum with a loose powder blush or some lipstick in a pink, red or peach shade. Blend it onto your cheeks with your fingers or a synthetic blush brush. A mixture of Vaseline and your favorite lipstick becomes a custom gloss for light makeup days.
