How to Make Conversation With Your Boyfriend

Starting a conversation with your boyfriend doesn’t have to be intimidating. While it might seem a bit scary, if you’re in a relationship, you should be able to communicate with him. If you feel that you guys aren’t talking enough and you need to reach out to him, there are several ways to initiate a conversation without seeming awkward or clueless.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to him first. Ask questions. While you don’t want to interrogate him, you do want to leave the door open for him to participate in the conversation.

    • 2

Speak your mind when it's your turn. Conversation is give and take, so you’re going to have to try to make sure the interaction is balanced.

    • 3

Keep it general. Ask him about his day just to break the ice. He will likely ask you similar questions. If he seems shy, you can mention a few things about your day without talking too much. If he still doesn’t seem to chime in, suggest that you two do something together that week, and ask for his input as far as the plans.

    • 4

Pay attention to his interests, and ask him about some of them. Chances are, he’ll be happy to tell you about the things that he enjoys. Express any shared interests. Knowing that you share common interests is a definite catalyst for conversation. However, don’t pretend to know about something you’re clueless about.

    • 5

Casually bring up a memorable event that you shared together. Share your memories, and allow him to share his as well. Going down memory lane together can be nice. If you’re a new couple and you don’t have a lot of memories yet, you could talk about things you’d like to do together in the future.

    • 6

Discuss music, television and movies. Compare tastes, interests and favorites. There is such a vast array of media arts, this topic will give you lots to talk about.

    • 7

Talk about whatever is on your mind. One of the keys to a good relationship is being honest and able to communicate with one another. So if there is anything you want to say, just say it! If he’s not receptive to listening, he might not be the right guy for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to listen to him so you understand what he is really trying to say to you.

  • Don't feel as though you have to be talking every second. Silences are great sometimes.
