How to Tie a Military Tie

Military members are known for looking professional in their dress uniforms. To help maintain that look they use the Windsor Knot. The Windsor Knot is a thick, wide and triangular tie knot, also regarded as the most formal and upper-class of the necktie realm. The best part is if you can remember “Loop, Swoop and Pull” you can do it.

Things You'll Need

  • Tie
  • Mirror

Pull up the collar on your shirt and fix your top button.

Wrap the tie around your neck. The wide end should hang around a foot below the narrow end. Cross the wide end over the narrow end. Make sure that the wide end is on the side of your dominant hand.

Loop the wide end through the hole between the collar and your tie. Pull back down.

Swoop the wide end clockwise under the narrow end twice. When you finish, the wide end should be inside out. This is going to form the tie knot.

Throw the wide end across the tie knot.

Pull the wide end up through the loop again.

Pull the wide end down through the knot in front.

Bring the knot up to your neck using both hands to tighten it.

Put down your collar. Look in the mirror to do any final adjustments.
