Step 1
Gather enough large bins to fill the storage space that you designate for Christmas decorations. Once those bins are full, purge broken and rarely used items to make room, rather than purchasing additional containers that will clutter your home. Find pieces to toss or donate to charity.
-
Step 2
Remove lights from the tree and carefully wrap them around large pieces of chipboard or notched cardboard rectangles you can store inside a separate cardboard box. Use the same method for strands of beads and garland.
-
Step 3
Stow ornaments in their original boxes or a container of drawers where they'll stay safe if you've got the extra storage space. Hang smaller bread dough, plastic or metal ornaments in specialty containers that make it easy for you to find them next Christmas.
-
Step 4
Stash items that can break or scratch in their original foam boxes or packing materials. These include snow globes, glass figurines, candles and reflective metal decorations. If they're not available, wrap the items in soft cloth and surround them with packing peanuts or bubble wrap. Label the container to let everyone know it contains fragile objects.

Step 5
Iron and fold your Christmas tree skirt, table runner, holiday placemats, wall hangings or other fabric decorations and place them over the other items in the bins.
