As a business owner, you've probably encountered many different business opportunities. Some of them may turn out to be money makers, while others may be more trouble than they're worth. The trick is to research each business opportunity properly to make sure that it has the potential to be successful.

Be honest about your abilities and strengths.There may be a lot of money in urinal cakes, but that doesn't mean that you want to spend your life savings on starting up a urinal cakes business. You should have a genuine interest in the product and be willing to learn more and devote your time to it.

Research the prospects of each opportunity by doing a complete market evaluation. Don't rely on hunches or gut feelings; you need to make sure that someone out there needs your product and is willing to pay for it. Also research the potential for profit compared to the start-up costs associated with such a business.

Learn more about the company behind the offer. A viable company can provide you with financials and references so that you can make sure they're legitimate. Be wary of anyone who's unwilling to provide such information. You can get information about the company from the Better Business Bureau, and hire an attorney to research the company from the legal perspective.

Find out what it takes to run the business. You need to know what type of training and resources you'd need to make the business opportunity a success. You may need a college degree or access to a production facility, so make sure to ask plenty of questions before taking on a new business endeavor.
