How to Take a Driving Test

Taking a driving test is a rite of passage for millions of people. Everyone has their own particular horror stories or comedies about this stressful and exciting moment. A new driver should prepare to take the driving test by carefully studying and fully understanding the state laws governing drivers and vehicles before taking the test.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the rules of the road. Purchase a book or take a class on how to drive. These will often provide you with an up-to-date overview of all state and national laws that you will need to know for the test and also to be a safe driver.

    • 2

Learn to be a defensive driver, traditionally a part of the test. This is the theory that if every driver on the road is monitoring the other cars around them for signs of trouble and danger, than those drivers will be safe. This is a valuable tool at any level of driving. Learn it and remember it for life.

    • 3

Listen to what the test giver is saying. The person administering the test will give you certain commands throughout the test. Ask questions if you don't understand what you're supposed to do. This is a common way to mess up a driving test.

    • 4

Master the parking portion of the test. Several states require drivers to pass a parallel parking test to get a license. Even if you do not reside in one of those states, it is a valuable skill that will help you down the road.

    • 5

Be polite to the test administrator. This person is largely responsible for deciding whether you will pass. If you are polite and amiable with the test administrator, you may gain an edge.

    • 6

Show up on time for your test. Often many tests are scheduled throughout each day. If you are significantly late, you may have to reschedule your test. Driving tests are typically booked several weeks in advance.
