Step 1
Schedule an appointment with an appropriate medical professional. In order to begin an effective treatment plan, you must meet with a physician, psychiatrist, therapist or clinical psychologist. The doctor can assist you with behavior management, provide you with nutritional information and inform you of healthy alternatives to weight management.
-
Step 2
Complete the necessary examinations. Your doctor must give you a complete medical evaluation and physical examination in order to determine your current health status.
-
Step 3
Discuss the treatment options with your doctor. Your treatment options depend on the severity of the bulimia and your current health status. The various treatment options include hospitalization (for significant weight loss, medical problems, chemical imbalances, depression and/or having suicidal thoughts), nutritional rehabilitation, weight restoration, psychotherapy, individual counseling, drug therapy (antidepressants, lithium or Topamax), group therapy, psychiatric care and residential treatment.
-
Step 4
Select an appropriate treatment option. Your doctor helps you pick a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
-
Step 5
Follow all instructions and guidelines for the treatment plan. It is important to complete the entire treatment process and attend all of your counseling or therapy sessions, take all of your medication and follow an appropriate nutritional meal plan as instructed by your doctor.
