A Van Dyke is one of many goatee styles. It combines a goatee with a moustache. Goatee styles such as this are popular and compliment a wide variety of face shapes. Goatees require constant maintenance and men who want them should be prepared to shave every day. Some men simply cannot grow a good looking goatee.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stop shaving for a few days. As your stubble starts to grow in, you will begin to get a feel for whether you will look good with a van dyke or any of the goatee styles.

  2. Step 2

Shave your face, leaving the hair on your lip and chin. It's important that your goatee is symmetrical, so take special care when shaving towards the edge.

  3. Step 3

Keep maintaining your Van Dyke goatee by shaving every day. As the goatee grows longer, you may find that you need to trim it.

  4. Step 4

Add a thickening lotion if you think you need it. You cannot change the genetics that makes your goatee look a bit thin, but you can do something to make it look better. A thickening lotion may be just what you need to get a nice, full goatee.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's best to use an electric beard and moustache trimmer to maintain goatee styles. These allow you to adjust the length and keep a uniform look.
  • Vary the style of your goatee to find one that best fits your face.
  • Don't let stubble grow in. While stubble may look great on men without goatees, if you have a goatee, it ends up looking messy.
