If you know how to type, you can operate a keyboard. If your typing skills are lacking, there are ways to improve your keyboarding skills. The following will help you learn to operate a keyboard.

  1. Step 1

    Learn where the keys are located on the keyboard. This is the first rule of learning to operate a keyboard. If you don't know where the keys are, it is impossible to type the proper letters without looking. So study and memorize where the letters and numbers are located on the keyboard.

  2. Step 2

    Practice typing. Operating a keyboard is practically the same as typing. Therefore the better you are at typing the better you will be at keyboarding. There is a site in the resource section that will show you which fingers to use for the various keys.

  3. Step 3

    Improve your speed. After practicing awhile, it is important to test yourself to see how competent you are with the keyboard. There are fun exercises in the resource section that will help you improve your speed and accuracy.

  5. Step 5

    Find a typing or keyboarding course. If you aren't prepared to teach yourself to type or keyboard, find a class that can teach you. Most high schools and local community colleges offer typing or keyboarding classes.
