Many search engines offer free email accounts with lots of storage, including Yahoo, Google and MSN. Though they are enticing, many users quickly find that having several email accounts is counterproductive. The way you delete your account depends on which service you use.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Abandon your search engine email account. This is the easiest way to get rid of it. The company automatically deletes any account that is dormant for a long period of time, usually between 30 and 60 days.

  2. Step 2

Go to the company's "Contact Us" page to send an email or call customer service and ask them to delete your account. The company will either delete the account, or tell you how to do it yourself.

  3. Step 3

Access your email account settings. In some search engine email accounts, you may find a "delete button," a link that deletes the account.

  4. Step 4

Find the "Help" link in a Hotmail account. If you click on it, you'll see a screen that will either allow you to delete the account or tell you how to do so.

  5. Step 5

Click on the "Edit" link in a Gmail account to find the link to delete it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Notify everyone on your contact list before or immediately after you delete the email account. Also change the information on your records, letterheads, business cards and resumes.
  • Deleting your email account may also delete you messenger service and other programs offered through the search engine.
  • Do not delete the account unless you are sure you will never need it again.
