How to Ship Cargo by Train

Shipping cargo by train can be the most practical and least expensive way to send your freight from one location to another. It's an especially affordable option if your cargo is very large and heavy, like vehicles. Ideally, your cargo should be located near a rail so you don't need to send it long distances for drop-off and pick-up.

Instructions

    • 1

Weigh the pros and cons of shipping cargo by train instead of other methods. Decide if the pros outweigh the cons for your freight. While you're doing your background research, be sure to complete a cost comparison of shipping method by contacting the freight shipping options (truck, train, boat, plane) with your specific needs.

    • 2

Contact the rail company you'd like to ship your goods with to find out how far in advance you should book shipping. Many rail companies requires just a two- to three-day notice during the regular work week.

    • 3

Find out which yards your chosen freight train visits on its route. Some trains don't do drop-offs and pick-ups at all yards every day, and instead have a schedule they follow. Find out if the freight train's schedule meets your needs.

    • 4

Make sure your cargo is packed according to the train company's specifications. Large items such as vehicles obviously don't need to be packed, but you shouldn't have anything personal in the vehicle. Other items such as food needs to be properly packed in wooden crates to prevent spoilage. Breakables need to packed in such a way that they don't jostle.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can find freight trains by looking in your local yellow pages or by contacting a freight broker.

  • Be sure to purchase insurance for your cargo if the freight train's insurance doesn't cover damages or lost goods.
