How to Install Kitchen Wall Tiles

Redesigning and redecorating a kitchen can be a lot of fun without being too much work. One great addition can be a tiled wall. Here's a quick and easy way to tile your kitchen wall.

Things You'll Need

  • Tile
  • Grout
  • Grout spreader
  • Tile clipper
  • Tile adhesive
  • Gloves
  • Plastic spacers
  • Trowel
  • Remove the cover from all electrical outlets on the wall. Turn off the power to these outlets. Wet a sponge and clean the wall. Dab dry with a clean rag.

  • Apply adhesive with a trowel to a small area. Lay the first tile on the adhesive and gently push on it to be sure it takes to the adhesive.

  • Place spacers on all corners of the tile. Lay the next tile flush against the spacers. Continue with another tile. Add spacers to each tile as you go. Spread more adhesive to the wall in a small section, apply tiles and secure spacers.

  • Cut the tiles with a tile cutter to fit the edges and corners of the wall. Allow the adhesive and tiles to set for several hours. Remove the spacers.

  • Fill in the spaces with grout. Put some grout on a grout spreader and smooth it across the tiles so it fills in the grooves. Continue until all spaces are completely filled in.

  • Wipe the tile with a damp sponge to remove excess grout. Wait a few hours while the grout sets and dries. Polish the tile with a wet sponge or cleaner. That's it! You just tiled a wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • If doing a design, plan it out and even sketch the tile spacing by tracing the tile configuration in pencil on the wall.
  • Don't spread the adhesive all at one time; it will dry up before you can place all the tiles.
