Use Basic Editing Tools With Documents

  1. Step 1

Check your spelling with Google Doc's basic spell-check tool. Go to Tools -> Check Spelling or click on the "abc" icon in the toolbar. Any misspelled or questionable words will be highlighted in yellow. Click on any highlighted word to see a number of suggested replacements. Correct your words and click on the icon again to turn off spellcheck.

  2. Step 2

Discover how many words, characters, spaces, paragraphs and sentences you've used with the "Word Count" tool. Go to Tools -> Word Count to see a breakdown of these statistics as well as information about the readability and grade level of your document.

  3. Step 3

Change font type, size and spacing. The default font in Google Docs is "Verdana" and the default size is 10pt. Use the drop-down menus in the toolbar to choose a different font and size. Once you've chosen them, the document will automatically reformat to the new selections. You can also go to Edit -> Document Styles to change the font and its spacing.

  4. Step 4

Replace words or phrase by using the "Find and Replace" tool. Go to Edit -> Find and Replace to type in the words to find and the words with which to replace the phrase. Click "Replace All."

  5. Step 5

Use keyboard shortcuts to make basic changes like boldface, copy-and-paste and alignment. The keyboards shortcuts for Google Docs are essentially the same as in any other word processing program. To see a complete list of available shortcuts, visit Google Docs keyboard shortcut cheat sheet.

Tips & Warnings
  • One of Google Doc's unique editing features is the ability to view and revert to previous incarnations of your document. Simply navigate to File-> Revision History to see all the revisions and how long ago they were made. When you're done looking at the revision, either click "Return to Editing Document" or "Revert to this version."
