While you can't permanently shrink your pores, there are many products out on the market today that will help tighten them and make your skin look smoother.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Face cleanser
  • Facial moisturizer
  • Face mask or peel
  1. Step 1

Cleanse your face with an oil-free cleanser. It should contain either salicylic acid, lactic or glycolic acid, or an antibacterial (such as tea tree oil). This should be done at least twice a day.

  2. Step 2

Exfoliate your skin with a facial exfoliator to remove dead skin cells. You should exfoliate your face two to three times a week to keep pores looking small.

  3. Step 3

Tone using a clarifying, oil-free toner to purify the skin and remove any residual cleanser or exfoliant. Toners generally refresh the skin and can help in tightening pores.

  4. Step 4

Treat pores with a product that will help shrink pores, eliminate excess oil, and decrease facial blemishes. This is usually in a gel form and there are many different products on the market to help the appearance of the skin.

  5. Step 5

Moisturize skin with an oil-free moisturizer or a mattifying creme. A mattifying creme is generally designed to absorb excess oil throughout the day and not allow your skin to become shiney. If your skin is oily, choose a lightweight moisturizer (especially in the summer) to avoid excess oil buildup in the T-zone.

  6. Step 6

Visit a dermatologist if you have severely blocked pores, as he may have to prescribe a retinoid creme to help exfoliate and cleanse pores to get rid of the oil and buildup. If the prescription medications don't work for you, the dermatologist may need to use a chemical peel, light or laser treatment to cleanse the pores and make them appear smaller.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a cleanser with up to 1 percent salicylic acid or up to 5 percent lactic or glycolic acid to help keep pores clean.
  • Make sure the moisturizer you pick is oil-free.
  • Masks and peels will help for short-term pore shrinking, but must be done at least once a week to maintain smaller pores.
  • If pores are clogged with many blackheads and whiteheads, you need to see a dermatologist.
  • If over-the-counter medications don't work on your pores, you may need a prescription creme or light treatment from a dermatologist.
