How to Become a Professional Tennis Player

Every kid at tennis camp has a dream of becoming a pro. The chances of that happening for most are slim to none. For the few who actually make it to that point, little is known about what it took to get there. Parents and kids should be committed to the idea. For those who are, here’s how to become a professional tennis player.

Becoming a Pro

1. Join the United State Tennis Association. This organization is the proving ground for young upstarts. Young players should get involved in “Futures” games in order to get in line for ranking.

2. Qualify for national ranking by reaching the top 500. Use all the resources available at USTA including player development programs and play any and every game that’s allowed.

3. See International Federation of Tennis itinerary for Professional Circuit Events. Reaching the top 500 in national ranking allows inclusion into ITF events. This is how to gain access to the world stage and the path to professional tennis player.

4. Spend at least $20,000. This is the minimum that will need to be invested into a professional tennis player. It will cover essentials such as tennis lessons, travel, entry fees and court fees. If a player is lucky enough to get a sponsor, much of these costs may be waived.

5. Be ambitious. Attitude determines altitude. Tennis is a game of skill and heart. A professional tennis player needs to have ample amounts of both.

6. Practice during waking hours. It is important to practice as much as possible. Have fun while practicing so the game remains a labor of love.
