How to Set a Password for Safe Mode in Windows XP

Safe mode in windows is a special diagnostic operating mode in which your computer runs the bare minimum of drivers. It enables you to diagnose and troubleshoot problems with the computer, for example getting rid of spyware, web search toolbars Trojans and other malicious applications. However, safe mode can pose a security risk, because if someone reboots your PC in Safe Mode, they can by pass your passwords and access your PC.       Shut down your computer. After 20 seconds, reboot your computer in Safe Mode. Here's how: *As your computer boots up, tap the F8 key repeatedly as soon as your computer's logo appears (Dell, Compaq, or other logo). *When the "Advanced Boot Options" screen appears, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to highlight the "Safe Mode" option. Press the "Enter" key

      *Select the Windows XP operating system that you use (XP or Professional). Press "Enter." This will load Safe Mode on the PC. When Safe Mode is loaded, it will bring up the Welcome Screen.

      Click on the "Administrator" icon to log in. Click on "Yes" so as not to use "System Restore Mode."

      Click on the "Start" button in the bottom left-hand corner of your PC. Click on "Run" and then type "control userpasswords" into the Run dialogue box. Press "Enter." This will bring up a window that will give you the option to "Pick a Task" or "Pick an account to change." Click on the "Administrator" Option.

      Select "Change my Password" from the list of options that is displayed. Fill out the current and new password into the relevant text box provided. Click on "OK." Make a note of all the passwords that you set. You will have the option of using a password hint.

      Close the "User Account" window. Restart Windows. As long as you do not press any keys (such as the F8 key), your PC will reboot in Normal mode.
