Hold A Guitar Pick

Though it may seem trivial, learning to properly hold a guitar pick will help prevent bad habits in the future. You'd be surprised just how many guitarists have developed physical limitations preventing them from playing certain styles.

I'll show you how to hold the pick to ensure that these things don't happen to you.

From Quick Guide: Play the Guitar
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar pick
  • Guitar
  1. Step 1

Grab the pick in your hand and close your eyes. If you were to instinctively locate a comfortable position on the pick, where would it be?

  2. Step 2

Now open your eyes and look at your picking hand. How does it look? Perhaps it may seem that practically any position will suite you.

In my experience the most logical approach is to grab the pick between your index finger and thumb.

  3. Step 3

With the pick between your fingers press it down on a flat surface and pretend to write with it. This is the key! You've always known how to do this; it was just never applied to the guitar.

  4. Step 4

Now you can play the guitar with more finesse and accuracy than before. Just try to get acquainted with this new position.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have already developed a pick position it's never too late to try a different approach.
