Many red wines pair well with cigars

Choosing a red wine may be your best bet. A hearty red wine goes best with cigars. The bold flavor of a red wine will not be overpowered by the taste of a cigar.

Pairing white wines with cigars is a bit more challenging

Choosing a white wine to pair with a cigar is more difficult than choosing a red. If you prefer white wines over red, chose one that is light and dry. These white wines go well with cigars because they are rather neutral.

Avoid pairing sparkling white wines with cigars

Avoid sparkling white wines and Champagne with cigars. The bubbles will interfere with your palate and you will be unable to enjoy your cigar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some red wines that pair well with cigars are Pinot Noirs, Merlot, and cabernet sauvignon.

  • Spanish red wines typically go well with cigars because they usually have a smoky character to them.

  • If you prefer white wines, a Pinot Grigio goes well with many cigars.

  • Light red wines typically do not mesh well with cigars.

  • French red wines do not pair well with cigars. They are typically too delicate and tend to become overpowered by the cigar.

  • Riesling white wines are far too delicate to drink with most cigars.

Amazingly, a rather dark flavored smoke pairs nicely with a good Moscato d'Asti. The rich nutty/woody flavor accompanies the light fruity notes of the Moscato very well! The wine is not so light that is fades into the background, on the contrary, it melds perfectly. The sweetness of the wine stays to the front of the palate, while the dark tones of the smoke stay to the back, creating a beautiful symmetry meeting in the middle of the palate. Neither flavor seemed to overpower. I would also go as far as to say this is one of the finer pairings. Try it! Prosit!
