Select Scuba Diving Fins

Using the proper fins is crucial to having a good scuba diving experience. You cannot enjoy yourself if your fins are uncomfortable, don't fit or don't facilitate the type of diving you enjoy. There are many kinds of fins to select from, but what is the right type for you? Read on to learn how to select scuba diving fins.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your diving type. If you are slow and relaxed diver, then traditional paddle fins will work for you. If you need more force and speed, use split fins.

  2. Step 2

Choose full foot or open strap. Full foot fins cover your entire foot. There is no need to wear booties and in fact, they will not fit inside properly sized full foot fins. Open strap fins are adjustable and require a bootie to prevent blisters and chafing.

  3. Step 3

Select paddle fins for casual diving. Paddle fins are the most traditional fin. They are one long piece without a split or vent. They move the water up and down when you kick. Newer models are made to promote the most efficient kick.

  4. Step 4

Select split fins for weaker legs or faster diving. Split fins push the water back instead of up and down, thus acting like a propeller. You can cover more distance with less leg movement with split fins.

  5. Step 5

Select a style you like. Fins come in many styles and colors. Choose fins that are comfortable and fit your scuba style, but also that reflect the style of your gear and personality.

Tips & Warnings
  • Comfort is the most important aspect in choosing fins.
  • Always keep extra straps in your gear in case you break one while diving.
