Things You'll Need:
- tennis balls
- bat
- whiffle ball and bat
- 2 ping pong paddles
- large rubber bands
-
Step 1
Purchase your own equipment. Of course you could use borrowed gloves and bats but each feels different. You will only improve with a consistent bat and glove that suits you.
-
Step 2
Practice batting with tennis balls. Have a teammate pitch tennis balls to you. When you make a direct hit, they soar. When they hit you, they don't hurt. It gives you an incentive to hit the ball without the fear of getting hit.
-
Step 3
Catch balls with your bare hands. To take away the element of pain, use a whiffle ball. This helps you and other teammates realize that hands catch balls, not gloves.
-
Step 4
Strap a ping pong paddle to each hand using large rubber bands. Have a teammate toss tennis balls to you. This encourages you to have soft hands and to use both hands to catch a softball.
-
Step 5
Play active catch with a friend or teammate. You and your partner should alternate throwing to the other in a crouching position, hand over the head position, and regular, glove-at-chest position. Also alternate the throwing distances each time.

on 6/30/2009 Softball like baseball has several skills to be good at. One has to learn how to catch, throw, bat, base run, pitch, and catch for the pitcher. When these have been established, knowing the position and its responsibilities on the field is a must. Playing defense or offense in itself is a skill which takes years to perfect.
