How to Make Chum For Shark Fishing

How to Make Chum For Shark Fishingthumbnail
Chumming will attract sharks for fishing or viewing.

One of the most integral steps in shark fishing is proper chumming. Without chum, the sharks will not be attracted to your boat. If you don't have access to store-bought chum or would rather make your own, here's how.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • 35 pounds of small fish per 5 gallons of chum
    • Large bucket with lid
    • Electric grinder
      • 1

Determine how much chum you need. For a one-day trip, you might need as much as five 5-gallon buckets of chum.

      • 2

Determine how much fish you need. One hundred pounds of fish produces about 15 gallons of ground-up chum.

      • 3

Get the fish. Whether you are buying or catching the fish, you will need a lot of it. Use small fish like herring and mackerel.

      • 4

Grind it up. With your electric grinder, grind up the whole fish into a bucket. Leave about an inch of space at the top of each bucket for freezing. Place the lid on tightly.

      • 5

Freeze your chum. Frozen chum can last a whole fishing season or more. You can even re-freeze chum that you didn't use on a trip and it will work fine.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Place chum in a shark-resistant container like a perforated plastic bucket.

    • Do not use bags or other objects that sharks can bite and latch onto.
