Baseball Bats, Pipes and Other Club-Like Weapons

  1. Step 1

Consider the length of the weapon. Larger weapons are harder to dodge than smaller weapons. Fortunately, larger weapons leave wide openings when an assailant misses you with a wide swing.

  2. Step 2

Avoid ducking. Movies often depict action stars ducking out of the way of a club attack, but these maneuvers rarely work in real life. The ducking position often leaves you vulnerable and in a position where additional attacks are easy for your attacker. Ducking is also slower than other evasive movements and places you in a position where it's more difficult to counter-attack or run away.

  3. Step 3

Figure out which part of the weapon your assailant plans to use as the head. All weapons have what's called the "head" or the part of the weapon that causes the injury. With fast footwork, you should be able to move within the swing of the weapon and avoid the head. Grab a hold of the club and strike your enemy wherever you can until you have disarmed your opponent. Try to twist fingers and thumbs off the weapon if you can.

  4. Step 4

Quickly move in and try to attack after your attacker misses. Shorter clubs give an assailant a faster rate of attack, but these weapons still leave openings. Grab a hold of the hand that controls your attacker's weapon and try to twist your attacker's wrist until he drops the weapon. Remember to keep striking your attacker in order to distract him and decrease his motivation.

  5. Step 5

Prepare to defend against of club pokes. These are unexpected jabs with the head of the club which are sometimes difficult to evade. Evading a club poke is difficult, but you should be able to knock the club out of the way by quickly swaying your hand to the side and pushing the club or the enemy's forearm out of the way.

  6. Knives and Other Sharp Objects

  7. Step 1

Turn your vital parts away from the blade. Knife attacks are alarming. Grimly, most knife attacks will likely succeed in cutting their victims. However, you can increase the chances that the knife cuts a non-vital place like an arm or shoulder by turning with your chest away from the assailant. Remember, the only thing that should be on your mind during a knife attack is escape or the disarming of your assailant. Worry about your injuries only after the threat of additional injury is gone.

  8. Step 2

Evade knife attacks. The thing to remember about knives is that your attacker doesn't need to give a full swing in order to injure you with a knife. Knife fights can be much more unpredictable, which is why a defender must be prepared for any injuries that he or she might sustain.

  9. Step 3

Turn the sharp part of the knife towards the attacker and even attempt to cut the attacker when you are attempting to disarm. This might encourage the attacker to drop the knife.

  10. Step 4

Keep in mind that the attacker can cut your arm after you have successfully blocked a knife attack. The chances of you being cut can be decreased if you try to control the hand of the attacker. When controlling the knife of the attacker, use footwork to move your body as far away from the knife as possible.

  11. Step 5

Twist the enemy's wrist and try to direct the knife towards a vital part, encouraging the enemy to drop the knife. While doing this, you can try to trip your enemy, which could further increase the chances of him or her dropping the knife. You can also try to drive your palm heel into the back of the enemy's hand (the palm heel is the part of the palm closest to your wrist). Whatever you do, keep attacking and trying new approaches until you finally disarm your enemy.

  12. Step 6

Longer clubs can sometimes be evaded, an action which would create a great opening for a counter-attack. Regardless, be sure to strike or grapple as soon as your enemy is open.

  13. Handguns

  14. Step 1

Avoid being attacked by a handgun in the first place. Like the club and the knife, a martial artist really only has two options when facing a firearm: retreating or desperately attempting to disarm the gunman. Still, a martial artist can significantly improve his chances of surviving an encounter with a gunman by following a few tips.

  15. Step 2

Get low and run. The worst situation for any victim is to be under fire. If you are being shot at a distance and it is clear that you are the deliberate target, the best option is to crouch low and run. Depending on the distance, there is a good chance that the gunman will miss you.

  16. Step 3

Run even if you are shot. Even if the gunman hits you with a bullet, there is a good chance that you will be able to keep running and escape. There have been many reports of gunshot victims who were oblivious to the fact that they were shot until the adrenaline ran out. Find a phone and get medical attention immediately.

  17. Step 4

Attempt to disarm only if you are certain that you will be shot. If the gunman is at close range and you feel certain that you are going to be shot, you can attempt to knock the handgun out of the way and attempt to gain control of the weapon. This is an extremely dangerous situation and the handgun will very likely discharge, so try to direct the handgun in a direction where it will not shoot anything.

  18. Step 5

React immediately after knocking the handgun away from your attacker. Once the handgun is no longer pointed at you, attack the enemy aggressively. While controlling the handgun with one hand, elbow the enemy in the face, stomp on his instep, deliver a palm heel into the back of the enemy's hand in the same way that you would a knife. Anything you can do to get the enemy to drop the handgun is absolutely necessary. This is a horrible life-or-death situation and you must do whatever you can to remove your life from danger.
