Discovering a mold problem in your home isn't just an annoyance. Mold can cause serious health problems for people living in your home and the fungus can cause considerable property damage by invading wallboard, wood, carpet and more. Knowing how to clean up household mold is an important part of proper home maintenance and household health.
Things You'll Need
- Cleaning towels
- Rubber gloves
- Face mask
Find the source of the mold. For instance, if the household mold is caused by a water leak, stop the water leak so that mold regrowth is not an ongoing threat. Once the source of the mold growth has been handled, move on to mold removal.
Put on the face mask. Inhaling mold spores can cause respiratory problems.
Use a scraper to scrape the worst mold from areas such as wallboard or wood if needed.
Mix a light bleach solution in the bucket. Put on the rubber gloves and carefully wash all areas with mold on them.
Turn on a fan and direct it at the newly-washed area. Leave the fan on until the area has dried completely.
Mix miticide (anti-mold solution) with water. Re-wash the area with miticide.
Set the fan facing the area and re-dry the affected section.
Tips & Warnings
- For non-porous surfaces, wipe down the area (such as a baseboard, or countertop) with the light bleach solution. There is no need to use miticide.
- If mold has eaten into a porous material such as carpet, padding, wallboard, or plywood, you may need to remove entire sections to completely remove mold.
- Rewash the mold-affected areas at least weekly.
- Miticide is very caustic. Use in a well-ventilated area.
